Keyword Search Browsing

No I am not talking about typing a keyword into the search bar where it says "Google" What I am talking about is revolutionary.

While that little dandy widget is nice  - it is by no means exhaustive - for commonly used search engines.

Most of can admit that the only time we change it is to look for something on Wikipedia because we hate spelling Wikipedia - :)

And while 6 common ones are standard practical ones outside of the biggest search monsters don't seem to exist.  For the longest YouTube wasn't even available - I know right.  So I came across this handy little time save.

I realized that I personally don't even use that dandy search widget it except for Google which becomes my default I find myself going to a webpage waiting for it to load - then going to the search bar on the page then typing in what i really finally wanted to know then waiting on it to load the results then clicking through to the result.

Well what I do and have been doing for over 2 years is using the Keyword Search that is built into Firefox. Some of you maybe saying "What?!" I know.  This is real easy to set up.  Here let me tell what I'm talking about.  On my blog I have search for amazon - RIGHT CLICK ON IT -  you will see a drop down menu come up - CLICK ADD A KEYWORD SEARCH FOR THIS - when that comes up simply only the letter "a" then save -

Now here's where the magic comes in go to where the URL is on the top of this page - LEFT CLICK ON IT-  now type "a"  space "hd webcam"  ENTER

you should now see results on  your screen a full listing of all webcams that Amazon offers.

The nerdy fun is just beginning and should be available regardless if you use chrome or safari. Now lets make it a little more practical.   Lets simply go to - i don't know - www.imdb.com then find their search bar.  Dont type anything - and lets do what we did before - again RIGHT CLICK on the field of the search bar and CLICK ADD A KEYWORD SEARCH FOR THIS type the letter "i"  and then click save.  You have just customized your browser.

The possibilities really are endless but I would caution you not to get to crazy with this.  So I tried to put a list together for you based on one to two letter key strokes and likelihood of use.

How can you say thank you for my efforts, you ask? If you want to thank me just make sure you start using the "a for amazon" keyword instead of the widget or their website url.  By doing that theyll toss some pennies my way every time you make a future purchase.

The Best Way I Found to Keep Up with Netflix

Keeping up with Netflix may sound like an easy task, you may think that Netflix would want to show what would be worth watching.  Sure you can feel up your Instant Que with a litany of mindless television but to see what is worth seeing, I found www.instantwatcher.com.  They have some kind of agreement or technology that pulls Netflix data and searched items and filters into genre and popularity.  Toy Story 3 showed up streamable on this site a full week before it came up any Netflix recommended pages.  That is how I keep up with instant streams, for blockbusters that's actually surprisingly a little more manual, and I don't see them making a priority.  You could be proactive, which can be a disservice,  lets say you want to watch "Megamind" you pull it up in Netflix before it is available and click Save, that keeps it, but then puts it in your Que, which is good, but defaults to bottom, which is bad.  To make it easier to see when a DVD finally makes it through the 28 days after it has been on DVD I do two things.  First,  I keep "one" of my homepages as Netflix's most recent DVD arrivals shown here and every Tuesday I try to check the site and update my DVD Que with anything I see worth watching. I also subscribe to redbox emails, not for renting at redbox, but I know anything Redbox has available Netflix now does also.  I hope this helps.  It really shouldn't have to be this way-  but this is the best way.

The Best Way I found to Crush a Pizza Box

Challenge- Fit a large 32 in Pizza Box into a small kitchen trash can.

  • Common Solution - The Rectangle Method
  • Better Solution - The Triangle Method.
We have all tried  to fold the square pizza in half into rectangle and then once again into a smaller triangle.  The first problem with this method is that its hard to do. Boxes are meant to support  weight along the edges so are often harder to crease them there.  The second problem is that it often makes a mess and you then have to try and keep the box folded while it fights you to return to its original square shape.   This is all happening while you mash it into the trashcan.

I introduce to you the Triangle Method,  just like with the square method, once the pizza box is empty fold it half, but instead of folding it in half like a rectangle fold it diagonally like a triangle.  The resistance you had with the rectangle was pretty significant but you should find this way much easier due to the fact that the pizza box often has seems or week spots at their corner.  Then once it is folded as triangle fold it again into a smaller triangle, if done correctly it should trap all the crumbs in the middle.  It should now fit easily into your trashcan with significantly much less frustration than what the rectangle method.
